10 Steps to Packaging Your Product
What You Need To Know

PAC to the FUTURE II
Cheryl Sullivan of Pack Your Product had the pleasure of attending PAC to the FUTURE II in Montreal, Canada last week.  This two-day event brings together thought leaders, top consumer goods companies, retailers, packaging suppliers and key industry representatives from throughout the supply chain.  Here are a few things we’d like to share:
The Circular Economy
Major companies are embracing the circular economy concept by pledging to take responsibility for the packaging they put in the market.
Coca-Cola – a World without Waste – 100% recyclable using 50% recycled content and recover and recycle 100% of their packaging by 2030.
Proctor & Gamble has committed, as part of their Ambition 2030 plan, to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. In addition, P&G are starting to incorporate recovered ocean plastics in their bottles.

TAKEAWAY: The stories being told by big brands are changing. This is going to accelerate the expectations of mainstream consumers around retail packaging and the circular economy. Where will your brand stand?

Ecommerce and ‘Omni Ready’ Packaging
Length: 3:04
As major retailers and ecommerce companies move to omnichannel marketing, we will be seeing more demand for ‘omni ready’ packaging.

This means that packaging will have to be designed to handle the rigors of distribution across all channels while striving to provide appropriate package protection and promotion, avoid over packaging and optimize the cost of transit
.
OPPORTUNITY: The next few years are going be very fast paced as the omnichannel landscape shapes packaging performance.  Make your next product part of the solution.  Package with both home delivery/off the shelf retail models in mind.  Retailers will love you for it.

Take a walk through Alibaba’s new chain of supermarkets – Hema (video above) to see what is coming.

Smart Labels
Omnichannel involves the need for digital connectivity as consumers seek a leaner, transparent and more connected supply chain. Robotics for picking, packing and tracking are being integrated.

Consumers are asking for increased traceability, package trackers, delivery times and a unified brand experience both at physical points of sale and when unboxing at home. Smart product labelling can deliver this.
How Intelligence Can Be Incorporated Invisibly
PREDICTION: We expect to see Smart Labels become mandatory moving forward as the supply chain continues to evolve to meet consumer demands.
